"At Sand City Lovers Whisper at Dawn" transforms Kitaoka's recurring imaginary sandy cityscape into an explicitly lyrical, narrative subject: the city's geometric architecture becomes the setting for a private human moment, lovers sharing words as the city wakes around them. The title's romantic specificity contrasts with the composition's formal abstraction, the warm sandy tones of the built environment softened perhaps by the hour of dawn and the intimacy of the scene. It is Kitaoka at his most poetic — the modernist grid inhabited by feeling.
