Description
Snow falls on a town in this 1966 print, the accumulated snowfall muffling the city's geometry under white accumulation. Kitaoka renders snow's transformation of the urban landscape through careful attention to what snow does to form: rooflines thickened by accumulation, streets narrowed by drifts, the city's familiar geometry softened and simplified by the white covering. The winter urban scene was a subject he returned to across his career, the snow functioning as a kind of natural minimalism imposed on the built environment.
