A girl playing hanetsuki — the traditional Japanese badminton played with a hagoita (decorated paddle) and hane (shuttlecock made of soapberry seed and feathers) — a New Year's game associated primarily with girls and young women. Hanetsuki was played at the beginning of the new year as a warding-off game: missing the shuttlecock resulted in having one's face marked with ink, supposedly to repel evil spirits. Sadanobu III's composition captures the graceful physical gesture of the game with the warm palette of traditional Kansai children's figure printing.
