Girl with Drum

A girl with drum — a young woman or girl holding or playing a traditional Japanese percussion instrument, likely the tsuzumi (hand drum) or taiko (large drum) associated with festival and theatrical performance. Drums appear throughout Japanese festive culture from the great taiko of shrine festivals to the small tsuzumi of Noh and geisha performance, and Sadanobu III's composition places the girl figure in relationship to this musical tradition. The drum's rhythmic associations contrast with the stillness of the printed image.
