Typical Price
Goyo's cherry blossom nocturne is among his rarest non-figurative works. With only 14 woodblock designs in his entire output, even his botanical and landscape subjects command serious prices. Lifetime editions (printed before his 1921 death) range $5,000-$15,000. Posthumous Tanseisha or Yuyudo reproductions are more accessible at $800-$2,000.
Description
Cherry blossoms glow pale and luminous against a dark night sky. The blossoms appear to float in darkness, their delicate petals catching an unseen light source that makes them seem almost phosphorescent. The composition captures the magical quality of yozakura (nighttime cherry blossom viewing), one of the most cherished aesthetic experiences in Japanese culture.
