This ink painting depicts a confrontation between a kappa — the amphibious yokai of Japanese folklore — and a prawn, rendered in a register that fuses the grotesque humor of Edo-period kappa imagery with warrior-scene conventions. The "red" designation in the title may indicate color added to an otherwise monochrome ink composition, possibly through mineral pigment or cinnabar wash applied to the combatants or background. Nishigaki's brushwork likely employs controlled ink gradation and calligraphic line to convey the physical dynamism of the encounter, drawing on the tarashikomi technique of pooled wet-on-wet ink for texture. The absurdist subject — a folkloric water creature in mortal combat with a crustacean — belongs to a strain of Japanese visual comedy with roots in Katsushika Hokusai's manga sketches, here refracted through a contemporary nihonga sensibility.
