Description
A two-figure bijin-ga depicting a man and woman together, a less common format in Eiho's print output than his single-figure compositions. Couple subjects in shin-hanga prints navigated carefully between decorous romantic suggestion and the more explicit erotic tradition of ukiyo-e shunga; Watanabe-published examples typically showed couples engaged in shared domestic activity — tea, music, garden viewing — rather than physical intimacy. Eiho's illustrator's instinct for storytelling would have been well-suited to these compositions, which require a legible relational dynamic between two figures within a compressed pictorial space. Costume contrast between male and female dress adds visual interest and anchors the gender pairing.
