Description

"Nontitle 2" is an act of deliberate refusal: Tajima names the absence of a name, calling attention to the convention of titling and choosing to bypass it. In doing so, he foregrounds the visual experience itself, stripped of the interpretive scaffolding a title usually provides. This is a characteristic sosaku-hanga move — asserting the artwork as autonomous object rather than illustration of a concept — and it places particular demands on the viewer to arrive at meaning through looking alone.
