Description
Amayadori — literally 'sheltering from rain' — depicts figures seeking cover from a sudden shower in a Korean agricultural landscape. This woodblock print likely shows farmers pausing their fieldwork, huddled beneath a thatched eave or tree canopy as rain sweeps across paddy fields. Hiyoshi Mamoru's years on the Korean peninsula gave him direct observation of the rhythms of rural life, and his treatment of inclement weather reflects that intimacy. The composition probably employs [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations in the sky to render the diffuse, grey quality of summer rain. As one of at least four known impressions or states of this composition, this version may differ from its counterparts in ink density, color register, or the tonal depth of the atmospheric passages. Korean vernacular architecture — low tiled or thatched structures set against flat agricultural plains — provides the spatial context.
