Description
A second impression or color variant of the Two Rabbits composition, this print likely shares its keyblock with the preceding version while applying a distinct palette to the color blocks. In Japanese woodblock printmaking, producing multiple color variants from a single set of blocks was a practical way to extend the commercial life of a design. The shift might involve a different background tone — from pale blue to warm gray, or from a deep night field to a lighter ground — or might alter the fur tones of the rabbits themselves from cool white to warm cream. The compositional elements remain constant: the pair of animals, their postures, and any accompanying flora or landscape elements. Each variant functions as a distinct print while making the underlying design logic apparent.
