Description
The third in what appears to be a series of related impressions of Nishimura's Two Rabbits composition. The existence of multiple titled variants suggests either a deliberate edition series or the survival of impressions from different print runs using the same blocks. In such cases, the printer's skill in inking the blocks and controlling registration directly affects the final result, and no two impressions from a hand-printed edition are strictly identical. This variant may show differences in the depth of the background wash or in the rendering of any grass or floral elements surrounding the animals. Rabbit subjects in the [kacho-e](/glossary/kacho-e) tradition frequently appear in compositions emphasizing stillness and seasonal mood, and Nishimura's series format allows each variant to offer a slightly different reading of that stillness.
