An untitled Nishimura Hodo woodblock print. His shin-hanga work combined the inherited traditions of Japanese decorative printmaking with modern sensibilities shaped by both the Western-influenced artistic education available in early-twentieth-century Japan and the evolving tastes of a modernizing Japanese audience that still valued traditional aesthetic subjects.
