Key value factors: As self-carved and self-printed works, sosaku-hanga value is tied to the artist's reputation and edition size. Larger formats, earlier editions, and historically significant works command the highest prices.
An untitled Nishimura Hodo woodblock print from his 1930s shin-hanga output. His decorative prints — technically accomplished, aesthetically refined, and rooted in the traditional subject matter of bijin-ga and kachō-ga — represent the best qualities of the shin-hanga movement's commercial production, works that succeeded in both artistic terms and as objects of decorative appeal for the sophisticated audiences they were designed to reach.
