Untitled (hodo-nishimura)

An untitled Nishimura Hodo woodblock print from his 1930s output. The shin-hanga movement that provided the framework for his practice was characterized by its combination of traditional Japanese subject matter, Western-influenced atmospheric effects, and the technical infrastructure of professional publishers and specialist craftsmen. Hodo's untitled prints are part of the same artistic project as his named works — an ongoing engagement with the decorative and atmospheric possibilities of the Japanese woodblock medium.
