Key value factors: As self-carved and self-printed works, sosaku-hanga value is tied to the artist's reputation and edition size. Larger formats, earlier editions, and historically significant works command the highest prices.
An untitled Nishimura Hodo woodblock print. The shin-hanga movement in which Hodo worked sought to revitalize the Japanese woodblock tradition by combining the technical heritage of Edo-period ukiyo-e with modern artistic sensibilities shaped partly by Western Impressionism, particularly in the treatment of light and atmosphere. Hodo's prints reflect this synthesis, bringing contemporary aesthetic values to traditional Japanese subject matter.
