Description
Trace #19 is a 2011 entry in Huang Chun-yuan's continuing 痕跡 ("trace") series, dated one year before Trace #20 and produced through the same screen-print methodology that defines the cycle. The series examines what remains on paper after repeated mark-making: ink residues, registration shifts, and the visual record of the squeegee's passage. Within the silkscreen process, Huang typically lays down multiple stencils with varied transparencies, allowing each pull to deposit new pigment without wholly obscuring what lies beneath. The resulting surface reads as accumulated rather than composed, closer in spirit to a palimpsest than to a designed image. Compared with traditional woodblock practice, screen printing affords a different kind of physical evidence — the mesh's grid, the bleed at stencil edges, ink halos — and Huang's series treats those technical artifacts as primary subject matter. Issued in a small edition under his Tsubaki Print Studio imprint, #19 sits among the earlier mature works in a cycle that has now extended over several years.
