Description
The Trace (痕跡) series occupies a sustained position in Huang Chun-yuan's studio output, with #20 marking a 2012 entry in this ongoing investigation. The Chinese title translates directly as "mark," "scar," or "residue" — a vocabulary that aligns with screen printing's capacity to record successive layers of pigment as a kind of physical memory. Typical of Huang's approach within this series, the work foregrounds the silkscreen process itself: registered passes of opaque and semi-transparent inks build a surface in which earlier strata remain partially visible beneath later layers. The image moves toward abstraction rather than depiction, drawing on the granular textures, edges, and scumbled fields that screen printing produces when an artist works against the medium's reputation for flat color. Issued through Huang's Tsubaki Print Studio in Taipei, Trace #20 belongs to the post-2000 Taiwanese print generation that has used screen print as a fine-art language rather than a graphic-design tool.
