Description
Shodoshima, in the Seto Inland Sea off Kagawa Prefecture, is an island known for olive groves, soy sauce production, terraced rice fields, and coastal scenery. Ido's print likely depicts a coastal or pastoral view of the island — perhaps the Angel Road sandbar at low tide, terraced fields, or the steep walls of Kankakei Gorge. The print extends his geographical range beyond Kyoto into the Inland Sea region, suggesting an interest in the island's distinctive landscape character. The 'calligraphy' tag may reflect a homonym confusion: 'shodo' written 書道 means calligraphy, while Shodoshima 小豆島 translates as 'small bean island.' The composition would emphasize the hazy atmospheric perspective characteristic of Inland Sea views, with [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) blue gradations describing distant headlands receding into mist over the channel.
