Description
The Matsuda establishment in the Kyobashi district — one of Tokyo's busiest commercial corridors running south from Nihonbashi — is depicted here in one of Yasuji's urban streetscape compositions. The Kyobashi area was undergoing rapid transformation in the Meiji period as brick buildings replaced the wooden merchant quarter of old Edo, and Yasuji's view captures this transitional character: old commercial patterns persisting even as the physical fabric of the street was rebuilt around them.
