True Pictures of Famous Places in Tokyo: Taro Inari Shrine in Asakusa-tanbo
by Inoue Yasuji

by Inoue Yasuji
$1,000–$8,000. Common views: $1,000–$2,500. Key value factors: Inoue's Meiji-era Tokyo views, influenced by his teacher Kiyochika, have both artistic and historical value. His early death makes works scarce.
The Taro Inari Shrine in Asakusa-tanbo — the rice paddies that bordered the Asakusa district on its western side, adjacent to the great temple complex — is shown here in its agricultural setting, the red torii and shrine buildings marking a sacred point within the flat working landscape. Inari shrines, dedicated to the kami of rice and commerce, were ubiquitous throughout old Edo, their red torii familiar landmarks in both urban and rural settings. Yasuji's view captures this one within the semi-rural character of the tanbo, the city visible beyond but the shrine itself still embedded in the agricultural world.
