$1,000–$8,000. Common views: $1,000–$2,500. Key value factors: Inoue's Meiji-era Tokyo views, influenced by his teacher Kiyochika, have both artistic and historical value. His early death makes works scarce.
The Sendai Moat in the Fukagawa district of eastern Tokyo was part of the elaborate canal system that defined the geography of old Edo, connecting the city's merchant and artisan quarters to the bay. Yasuji depicts this quiet backwater with the same attentiveness he brings to the city's more celebrated landmarks, treating the ordinary infrastructure of the working city as worthy of pictorial documentation. The moat's still water, lined banks, and glimpsed district buildings compose one of his characteristically unassuming but historically valuable views.
