True Pictures of Famous Places in Tokyo: Ariakero Restaurant, Imado
by Inoue Yasuji

by Inoue Yasuji
$1,000–$8,000. Common views: $1,000–$2,500. Key value factors: Inoue's Meiji-era Tokyo views, influenced by his teacher Kiyochika, have both artistic and historical value. His early death makes works scarce.
The Ariakero restaurant at Imado in the Asakusa district was one of the neighborhood establishments that Yasuji documented as part of his "True Pictures of Famous Places in Tokyo" series. Imado lay at the northern edge of Asakusa, a district of craftsmen, potters, and working-class residents whose local restaurants served the practical needs of the neighborhood rather than the appetites of pleasure-seeking visitors to the great Senso-ji temple nearby. Yasuji's view gives this modest commercial establishment the same careful pictorial attention he brought to the city's grandest monuments.
