Yabase, from the series "Eight Views of Omi (Omi hakkei)"
by Ito Shinsui

by Ito Shinsui
Shinsui's extensive oeuvre spans bijin-ga, landscapes, and genre subjects. Auction averages over 12 months reflect healthy collector demand across all subject types.
Yabase—the famous landing point on the eastern shore of Lake Biwa where boats set off for the return to Kyoto—is depicted in this 1912 color woodblock from the Eight Views of Omi series, one of the earliest in Shinsui's long engagement with these canonical Lake Biwa views. The "geese returning to Yabase" was one of the Eight Views' most poetically loaded subjects, associated with the waka poem tradition that found in the departing wild geese an image of separation and longing. The bokashi gradations build the atmospheric depth of the lakeshore at dawn or dusk.
