Shinsui's Taisho-era bijin-ga are his most coveted works. His early masterpieces like "Before the Mirror" (1916) fetch GBP 52,920 (~$67,000) at Sotheby's. The most iconic designs from the "Modern Beauties" series approach these heights with fresh, vivid original colors.
From the "New Twelve Images of Modern Beauties" series (1917), this early [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) by the nineteen-year-old Shinsui shows a woman in the act of applying rouge, the intimate cosmetic moment captured with a freshness and directness that announced him immediately as a major new voice in the [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) beauty print tradition. The series, one of Watanabe's first major shin-hanga commissions, helped establish both the artist's reputation and the visual vocabulary of modern bijin-ga. The delicate color woodblock technique renders the rouge's vivid red against the pale ground.
