Description
A third edition or design variant within Sozan's swallow-and-willow grouping, this print further demonstrates the Watanabe publisher's practice of producing thematic sets exploring a single subject across multiple compositional solutions. In shin-hanga production, such variants allowed collectors and dealers to acquire a series exploring seasonal or tonal progressions. This version may depict the swallows at a different altitude relative to the willow canopy, or foreground a single bird rather than a pair. The soft bokashi gradations typical of Watanabe-published kacho-e would unify the background wash behind the birds' silhouettes, while the willow foliage is rendered in layered translucent greens. The repeat subject across three prints suggests the composition was commercially successful in Western markets.
