$200–$1,500. Common bird prints: $200–$500. Key value factors: Ito Sozan's bird-and-flower prints are charming and affordably priced. Well-preserved examples with vivid color are most valued.
Blue and Red Macaws depicts a pair of tropical birds that, while not native to Japan, appeared in Japanese art through contact with Dutch and Portuguese traders who brought exotic animals to Nagasaki. Sozan renders these vividly colored parrots in the [oban](/glossary/oban) woodblock format, where the strong blues and reds of macaw plumage translate naturally into the saturated pigments of woodblock inks. The birds' long tail feathers and curved beaks create bold compositional lines that contrast with the more delicate forms typical of native Japanese bird subjects. Macaws in Japanese prints carry associations of the exotic and the imported, reminding viewers of Japan's historical connections to global trade routes. Sozan's pairing of two birds adds a social dimension, the macaws relating to each other within the picture space.
