$200–$1,500. Common bird prints: $200–$500. Key value factors: Ito Sozan's bird-and-flower prints are charming and affordably priced. Well-preserved examples with vivid color are most valued.
A solitary heron stands in falling rain, one of the most enduring compositions in Japanese bird-and-flower painting. The heron's white plumage against grey rain and dark water creates a tonal study in restraint, while the bird's alert, upright posture conveys patience and watchful stillness. Herons are associated with purity and solitary dignity in Japanese art, and depicting one in rain adds an element of stoic endurance, the bird standing its ground while the world around it is drenched. Sozan uses the [oban](/glossary/oban) woodblock format to render the rain as fine parallel lines, a technique perfected by earlier masters like Hiroshige and adopted by [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) artists for its ability to unify a composition under a single atmospheric condition. The heron becomes a still center within the moving curtain of rain.
