Description
This abstract mokuhanga print interprets the Japanese concept of ameagari — the atmospheric stillness that follows rainfall — through Rome's characteristic investigation of pigment behavior on washi. Water-based sumi and mineral pigments applied with a baren to dampened paper produce the soft, bleeding edges and tonal gradations that define this composition. The interplay of saturated and pale passages evokes the damp luminosity of a landscape seen after a storm has passed. Layered printings from multiple carved blocks likely build the chromatic depth, with bokashi gradations suggesting moisture-laden air or reflective wet surfaces. This is one of two prints Rome made with the same title, suggesting an iterative approach to the same atmospheric subject.
