$1,500–$6,000. Smaller works: $1,500–$2,500. Key value factors: Rome's contemplative abstract prints bridge Eastern and Western aesthetics. Limited editions hold value.
Rain and sunshine coexist in this oban mokuhanga, the contradictory weather condition producing the particular quality of light that occurs when water drops fall through sunlit air. Joshua Rome captures this fleeting atmospheric phenomenon through layered water-based pigments on washi paper, building the dual character of the light from transparent color passes that combine warm and cool tones within the same visual field. The mokuhanga technique has a natural sympathy with rain subjects, the water-based printing process echoing the meteorological event being depicted. A sunshine shower is inherently brief, a transient condition that resolves quickly into either clear sky or overcast, and Rome's print fixes this unstable moment in the permanent form of pigment absorbed into paper fibers. The image vibrates between brightness and shadow in a way that captures the visual paradox of its subject.
