Description
The Akasaka district of Tokyo — specifically associated in this print with the Japanese folk motif of lovesick cats whose nighttime yowling disturbed residents throughout the urban neighborhoods where the animals congregated. Sekino's cats-in-the-city subjects combine his affection for the animal with the urban observation of his Tokyo landscape prints, the cats providing an ironic counterpoint to the neighborhood's more refined associations.
