Description
The third in the woods etude series advances Sekino's formal investigation of forest subject matter, likely shifting compositional emphasis or seasonal mood relative to its predecessors. An etude structure implies systematic variation: each print in the group tests a different set of visual conditions—different light, different tree density, different depth of field—while maintaining the same underlying subject. Sekino's carving technique is well-suited to the task of rendering organic complexity without decorative excess, and the northern Japanese forests of his native Aomori would have provided direct reference for the specific character of the tree forms. The [oban](/glossary/oban) format, if used, would allow sufficient vertical space to capture the height of the trees and the depth of the canopy overhead.
