Description
Benkeibashi is a bridge in Sapporo, Hokkaido, spanning the Sosei River, and Sekino depicted it in multiple versions — a practice consistent with sosaku-hanga artists who worked through a subject across editions. This second version likely revisits the bridge's arched masonry form from a related but distinct vantage point or in a different season. The bridge's European-influenced stone construction, built in 1905, provides Sekino with strong architectural geometry to set against the organic forms of the riverbanks and surrounding vegetation. Variations across the Benkeibashi prints would allow comparison of how Sekino adjusted his color palette and compositional cropping when returning to the same motif, a process central to the creative print philosophy.
