Description
This print depicts a traditional Japanese ceremonial doll dressed in formal court or festival attire, a subject Sekino returned to as part of his broader interest in Japanese folk culture and craft traditions. Working in the sosaku-hanga mode, Sekino would have designed, carved, and printed the work himself, allowing close control over color registration and surface texture. The layered kosode and ornamental accessories of such dolls — whether hina dolls for the Hinamatsuri festival or musha-ningyo warrior figures — offer rich opportunities for precise color gradation through bokashi blending. The flat planes of lacquered hair and brocade fabric lend themselves to the woodblock medium's capacity for bold, contained areas of color. Sekino's characteristic attention to decorative pattern and his sensitivity to volume within essentially two-dimensional forms would distinguish this from a merely documentary rendering.
