Description

The station of Kanagawa — the third station from Edo, on the bluffs above Yokohama Bay — appears in this undated Tokaido print. Kanagawa was among the most historically fraught of the stations: it had been designated as one of the treaty ports opened to foreign trade in 1859, and the subsequent arrival of Western merchants and diplomats gave it a dual identity as both traditional post-town and new international gateway.
