Description
This print is a portrait of Kichiemon Nakamura I (1886–1954), the acclaimed kabuki actor celebrated for his powerful performances in historical and domestic plays. Sekino produced numerous kabuki actor portraits throughout his career, situating him within a long Japanese tradition of yakusha-e — actor prints — while reinventing the genre through the sosaku-hanga methodology. Rather than the commercial ukiyo-e convention of idealized likeness, Sekino's actor portraits tend toward psychological intensity, using bold carved lines, flattened planes of color, and selective exaggeration to capture the actor's stage presence. The print likely shows Kichiemon in a specific role, with costume, makeup, and facial expression identifying the character. Multiple woodblocks would render the layered patterns of the kimono or costume against a simplified ground, with particular attention to the dramatic geometry of kabuki face makeup.
