Description
This print depicts the city of Mishima in Shizuoka Prefecture, situated at the foot of the Izu Peninsula with views toward Mount Fuji. Mishima was historically a post town on the Tokaido road and home to the Mishima Taisha shrine, either of which may anchor the composition. Sekino's meisho-e treatments of Japanese cities and towns from the Showa period typically balance topographic specificity with modernist formal organization, using color areas and strong contours rather than illusionistic depth. The print may emphasize seasonal atmosphere — Mishima is known for its spring cherry blossoms — or focus on architectural elements of the shrine precinct. As a sosaku-hanga work, the composition, carving, and printing all reflect Sekino's individual artistic decisions rather than a division of labor between craftsmen.
