Description
Nihon-Bashi — the Bridge of Japan, the zero-milepoint of the old Tokaido from which all distances on the highway were measured — appears in this print as both architectural landmark and symbolic threshold. The bridge in its Edo-period form was a daily spectacle of commerce and movement, and Sekino's depiction likely captures the bridge's role as a node of urban life at the heart of the city rather than merely a picturesque structure.
