Description

Fireflies is a summer night subject with deep precedent in the Japanese print tradition, and Sekino's treatment likely centers on a dark ground — riverbank, garden, or shadowed grove — punctuated by tiny luminous points of pale ink representing hotaru in flight. Achieving the effect demands tight registration across the blocks: a deep indigo or sumi background printed with broad bokashi to suggest summer humidity, then a fine overlay of pale yellow or white dots placed precisely on washi by hand-pulled baren. Sekino's mature graphic style, refined within sosaku-hanga practice in which the artist controls drawing, carving, and printing himself, suits this kind of restrained, almost abstract subject. Fireflies belongs to his recurring engagement with seasonal motifs drawn from rural life, alongside snow scenes and onsen views, and shows the lyrical side of an artist who is more often discussed for his ambitious portrait series Faces of Japan.
