Description
The station of Shimada in Shizuoka, beside the Oi River, appears in this Tokaido print — the town serving as one side of the famous uncrossable river ford that required travelers to hire human carriers. Shimada's position on the highway made it prosperous from the continuous traffic of those waiting to cross or celebrating having crossed, and the town developed a distinctive commercial and social culture around this enforced hospitality.
