Description
A solitary road through the landscape near Shimada — the Tokaido stretching into the distance with no travelers visible, the highway caught in a moment of emptiness that gives it a different quality from the busy crowd scenes of commercial stations. The lone road subject has a meditative quality in Sekino's handling: the path as potential, the journey not yet begun or long completed, the road existing independently of the traffic it was built to carry.
