Description
This architectural subject likely depicts a traditional Japanese structure—farmhouse, temple gate, storehouse, or urban machiya—rendered with Sekino's characteristic emphasis on geometric order over picturesque detail. Sosaku-hanga artists engaged freely with both vernacular and monumental architecture as subjects, and Sekino was no exception. His architectural compositions tend to flatten perspective and stress the rhythmic interplay of horizontal eaves, vertical posts, and the diagonal of a sloping roof. The natural grain of the woodblock plywood surface could reinforce the texture of aged wood, plaster, or roofing tile when printed lightly. Color is typically applied in broad, decisive areas: deep shadow under eaves, the warm tone of weathered cedar, the gray-blue of roof tiles against a sky rendered in flat or graduated tone. The building is depicted as structure rather than as scenery.
