Description

Without a title, this print cannot be specifically placed within Sekino's subject categories, which ranged across portraiture, landscape, theater, animal studies, and folk subjects. As a sosaku-hanga artist who designed, carved, and printed every block himself, Sekino's work at any subject bears consistent material markers: the directional character of carved lines in honoki or shina plywood, the slightly granular texture of washi absorbing hand-rolled pigment, and the precise registration required for multi-block color work. His characteristic palette—warm earth tones, deep indigo, vermillion accents against muted grounds—appears across the full range of his subjects. Any work attributed to Sekino rewards close examination of ink density variation between the edition and any artist's proofs, and of the relationship between the carved line and the color blocks it contains or outlines.
