Description
Yabakei is a river gorge in Oita Prefecture, Kyushu, carved by the Yamakuni River through volcanic basalt formations. The gorge is characterized by sheer dark rock faces, dense forested slopes, and the narrow band of water and sky within the canyon. The subject invites a vertically oriented or tightly compressed composition emphasizing the drama of the cliff faces—their dark, striated surfaces rendered with heavy parallel carved lines and strong tonal contrasts between shadow and the warm reflected light on stone. Sekino would exploit the ability of the woodblock to render rock texture through controlled grain-following cuts. If depicted in autumn—Yabakei's most celebrated season—saturated reds, oranges, and yellows in the canopy would appear as sharp accents against the dark basalt. The composition belongs to the Japanese tradition of keisho-e, prints of scenic gorges and mountain landscapes.
