Description
Kisarazu sits on the western shore of Tokyo Bay in Kazusa Province, offering a view of Fuji across open water — a compositional opportunity Kaiseki uses to contrast the static mountain against the dynamic seascape. The print likely shows fishing boats or coastal activity in the foreground, with the bay's expanse occupying the middle ground and Fuji visible on the distant horizon across the water. Views of Fuji from the Bōsō Peninsula shore were a recognized subset of the broader Fuji-viewing tradition, used by artists to demonstrate the mountain's visibility across great distances. The reflective surface of Tokyo Bay would allow for subtle color gradations suggesting morning or evening light. [Bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) work in the water and sky registers would be technically demanding, requiring careful registration across multiple printing blocks to achieve smooth tonal transitions characteristic of quality [nishiki-e](/glossary/nishiki-e) production.
