One of Kawano's recurring themes was the tender relationship between children — particularly the tradition of older siblings carrying younger ones on their backs, an image deeply embedded in Japanese folk memory and visual culture. The figures are rendered with the simplified, bold outlines characteristic of his [sosaku-hanga](/glossary/sosaku-hanga) style, their forms interlocking to suggest both physical closeness and emotional bond. Such images resonated strongly with Western collectors in the postwar period, who found in them a warmth and universality that transcended cultural distance.
