Description
The third edition identified under the "Conversation" title represents another instance of Kawano revisiting a figure grouping across multiple print runs or compositional variants. The subject — two or more figures in close dialogue — allowed Kawano to explore the formal problem of relating human forms within a compressed picture plane, a concern central to his figure work. Differences between this and the other "Conversation" editions likely lie in color temperature, line weight, or the positioning of the figures relative to the edges of the sheet. Printed on washi using water-based pigments and baren pressure, the impression would reflect the subtle tonal gradations possible within the sosaku-hanga process.
