Description
This impression of the Hagoromo A composition demonstrates Kawano's practice of producing multiple editions or color variants of successful subjects for the postwar export market. The image depicts a tennyo, or heavenly maiden, in the pose or moment associated with the hagoromo legend — likely shown with the feathered celestial robe draped around or trailing behind the figure. Working entirely within the sosaku-hanga framework, Kawano controlled every stage of production, from the initial design drawn onto the woodblock to the final baren rubbing on washi paper. Variations between impressions bearing the same title designation may reflect intentional colorway experiments or successive print runs using slightly different ink applications. The dynamic treatment of drapery and the strong, hand-carved outlines are consistent hallmarks of Kawano's figure compositions from this period.
