Description
A variant impression of the 'Little Flora — Shibaraku' composition printed in a red-dominant colorway, as indicated by the kanji 花 (flower) in the subtitle. The shift to red fundamentally changes the emotional register of the print: where the grey version conveys restraint, the red version draws on the bold vermillion hues associated with kabuki costume and traditional [nishiki-e](/glossary/nishiki-e) polychrome printing. Kawano's [sosaku-hanga](/glossary/sosaku-hanga) technique is evident in the deep, confident gouge marks that define the figure's silhouette and drapery — cuts made directly by the artist rather than delegated to a professional carver. The botanical reference in the title and the Shibaraku connection suggest a figure costumed in theatrical or ceremonial dress, with floral motifs integrated into the composition. This impression appears to be one of multiple red-version printings, distinguished by subtle variations in ink application or block state.
