Description
Among the [oban](/glossary/oban)-format variants in Kawano's 'Long Necks' series, this print represents the series' sustained exploration of the female figure as a vehicle for formal reduction. The elongated neck, present throughout the group, elongates the composition's vertical thrust and draws attention to the relationship between line and surrounding space. Kawano worked in the [sosaku-hanga](/glossary/sosaku-hanga) tradition established by Koshiro Onchi and Shizuichi Hirafuku, which prioritized artistic individuality and direct engagement with printing materials over the workshop division of labor associated with commercial Edo-period production. In oban format, the figure occupies a generous pictorial field, allowing the negative space to carry compositional weight. Color areas, blocked in with flat or subtly graduated tones, likely isolate hair, skin, and garment in distinct chromatic zones. The series as a whole reflects the period's international art dialogue, absorbing influences from European modernism while maintaining recognizable Japanese figural conventions.
