Description
Titled 小鳥 (kotori, "small birds") in the Japanese, this limited edition print by Kaoru Kawano (1916–1965) depicts multiple birds rather than a single specimen, introducing into the composition the elements of interaction, movement, and spatial relationship between figures. In the kacho-e tradition, grouped birds—particularly in pairs—carry associations with companionship, seasonal change, and the transience of living things. Kawano's arrangement of multiple bird subjects typically places the figures along a branch or in adjacent perches, using their differing orientations to create rhythmic movement across the sheet without the composition becoming crowded. Color is applied with precision: individual birds' markings are differentiated through selective placement of two or three pigments, while the ground is handled with restraint to allow the forms to read clearly. The limited edition designation suggests a carefully controlled print run, likely produced for a specialist audience. The print reflects the mid-century sosaku-hanga movement's sustained interest in intimate natural subjects as vehicles for formal and emotional concentration.
